Epsom and Ewell Borough Council news

We have a story about the possibility of voter disenfranchisement in May’s local elections because of the new requirement to have appropriate photo ID, discussed at Reigate and Banstead Borough Council ahead of the May elections. Please make sure you have acceptable photo ID to vote to vote in May’s local elections. If you do not, you need to apply to Epsom and Ewell Borough Council (EEBC) for a Voter Authority Certificate (VAC) by the 25th April 2023.

Specsavers Surrey Youth Games

We have an announcement of the commencment of the Specsavers Surrey Youth Games beginning in May, with a wide range of activities available in Epsom & Ewell. The Games offer FREE local training for 7-16 year olds across Surrey, leading to a final celebratory family-friendly event at the Surrey Sports Park in Guildford on Saturday 17 June. Surrey County Council News

From April 2023, Surrey County Council (SCC) will take over THE responsibility for parking enforcement and highway grass cutting and weed control across the county. SCC are also supporting the national Blue Campaign which is all about councils and residents across the UK finding land suitable to let nature take over and grow wildflowers.

Sleep Research and Dementia

Following on from last episode’s story about the new Dementia Hub, this episode we hear that the University of Surrey has been awarded £1.7 million to further research into the sleep and circadian rhythms of people living with dementia. Led by Professor Derk-Jan Dijk, Director of Surrey Sleep Research Centre (SSRC), the research is conducted in close collaboration with Imperial College London and the Surrey and Borders Partnership Trust, as part of the UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI)

Epsom and Ewell Flight Noise Consultation

A new 6 week consultation is out for everyone effected by flight noise and pollution from the main London Airports of Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted, closing on the 9th May. The government aims to balance the impact of sleep deprivation with the benefits to the wider economy.

Sutton Library of things and Sutton Community Farm

You can now borrow all kinds of useful items from Sutton Library of Things for example sewing machines, steam cleaners and many different kinds of household items that you probably don’t often useand now don’t need to buy. Please visit their website for details.

Sutton Community Farm is run by volunteers to grow food locally to sell, they also donate to local charities and food banks. However, the cost of living crisis has reduced sales as the farm’s costs rise so they have launched a 6 week fundraiser to raise £50,000 to allow them to keep going. Bourne Hall Cash in the Wardrobe and Coronation Fete

Bourne Hall’s Cash in the Wardrobe fair provides residents with an opportunity to sell and recycle their pre-loved, second hand, vintage or new clothes. shoes, handbags and accessories. The market takes place every third Saturday of the month. Listen for dates or email debrown@epsom-ewell.gov.uk.

Coronation Fete at Bourne Hall

There will be a Victorian Coronation Fete at Bourne Hall on Saturday 29th April 10am – 4pm to celebrate King Charles’ Coronation. There will be a tug of war, a gift market and activities for all the family.

National Test Alarm

We have information about the siren-like emergency warning message that will be sent by the Government to mobile phone users across the UK on Sunday April 23 to test a new public alert system.
