This week’s Epsom and Ewell Talking Newspaper local news section, for the two weeks ending 19th May 2022 includes several police and crime bulletins but finishes with lots to look forward to with information about the many local Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
We begin with news about the new Mayor of Epsom and Ewell Borough Council for 2022-2023, Clive Woodbridge. Clive has been a councillor representing the residents of Ewell since 2007. This coming year the Mayor will be supporting the following seven charities: Epsom & Ewell Foodbank, Shine Cancer Support, Epsom Sports Club, Cardiac Risk in the Young, Racing Welfare, Bliss and JDRF Diabetes Research.
A mental health service program, Safe Havens is a series of out-of-hours clinics available for people suffering from a mental health crisis. Epsom Safe Haven has moved to the Brickfields Centre in Portland Place, Epsom and will continue to be open from 6pm-11pm every day of the year (including bank holidays and weekends).
We have news of the many Platinum Jubilee Events happening locally to celebrate the Queens’ 70 year reign, beginning on 2nd June with an RAF flypast over Surrey to mark the Queen’s Official Birthday. The colourful trail is expected to be overhead in Epsom between 12.40pm and 1.30pm.
There will also be a free community event with the Lighting of a Platinum Jubilee Beacon by the Mayor of Epsom and Ewell overlooking the historic Epsom Downs from 9.15pm on Thursday 2nd June.
Unfortunately, tickets have sold out for the Jockey Club’s Platinum Jubilee Launch Party which marks the beginning of Cazoo Derby weekend with Ladies Day on Friday 3rd June and Derby Day on Saturday 4th June.
As part of the celebrations, there will be an NHS Staff benefit concert, featuring the Salieri Quartet concert taking place at Epsom Playhouse at midday on May 27th followed by performances in Epsom market place.
Bourne Hall Museum is making the past come alive at a free event on Saturday, 28th May, between 9.30am and 5pm, you’ll learn about the local connections of past Kings and Queens and get an insight into the medieval period. In the afternoon there will be a full tournament, finishing with a Grand Melee when all the knights fight to the last man standing.
Age Concern’s Platinum Jubilee themed market stall will be in Epsom market place every Thursday throughout May between 8.30am and 4.30pm. It will provide inspiration, creative activities, demos and decorations to help you prepare for your celebrations.
Go Epsom begins it’s celebrations on the 1st June at 1.30pm with a Jubilee Family Festivel, which will be hosted in Epsom square and Epsom Marketplace. There will be free childrens entrertainment and live music with local charity stalls and performances by Ambition Dance. There will also be an evening concert from 6pm to 8pm with the Blunter Brothers.
