Epsom and Ewell Talking Newspaper local news section for the two weeks ending 13th October 2022, with news from local MP Chris Grayling of a new local Energy Support Scheme, council news within and outside the borough, a Royal visit, winners and a warning.

Charity News

We begin with details of how to donate to Energy Support Epsom and Ewell setup by Citizens Advice Epsom and Ewell (CAEE) with the charity the Good Company Surrey for winter 2022/23. Donations of the government energy discount of £400, or any affordable amount, can be made by visiting the justgiving.com/campaign/epsom-ewell-energy-support-scheme webpage. In other news, four new trustees have been welcomed to the CAEE board, whose frontline advisors are helping people with the cost of living crisis, all advice is free, confidential and independant.

A 22 year old deafblind women, Paige Barnes, from Chessington has entered the TCS London Marathon to fundraise for the national disability charity Sense. Sense supports adults and children with complex disabilities including deafblindness,

In other news Age Concern Epsom and Ewell express thanks to their volunteers, especially to two of their drivers for their miles of service.

Warning of Scammers

Citizens Advice have issued a warning about the latest scam inviting applications for the government energy discount but the text is sent by scammers. Only pre-payment meter holders need to apply for the energy discount but customers should always check whether an inviatation by text message is from their energy supplier. If the energy discount or any other scam is suspected it should be reported to Action Fraud or using the new direct Banking hotline 159.

Epsom and Ewell Borough News

Epsom and Ewell borough council has installed memorial benches throughout the borough. Councillors on the Strategy and Resources Committee are to meet The Friends of Horton Cemetery charity following the withdrawal of a compulsory purchase order for Horton Cemetery. The committee held a secret session regarding The Horton arts and heritage centre. The Community and Wellbeing Centre on Longmead has had a gas boiler approved.

Epsom and Ewell have both been awarded Silver in the annual South & South East in Bloom competition, Stoneleigh was awarded a commendation in this year’s competition.

County and Kingston Borough Council News

Surrey County Council have secured funding from the Defra Local Authority Treescapes Fund (LATF) to meet net-zero and to keep on target with planting 1.2 million trees by 2030.

Kingston Council have placed restrictions on the recruitment of public service workers, except social workers, without identifying which public sector jobs would be affected.

Royal News

It has just been reveiled that, in June, Her Royal Highness Princess Ann opened the ‘First World War Centenary Woods “Regiment of Trees”, Woodland Trust, Langley Vale Wood, Langley Vale Road, Epsom. Currently, the wood is only accessible on foot as the car park is not yet open.

Epsom Strength and Balance

Epsom Strength and Balance (ESB) work with Active Surrey to offer classes that specialise in exercises for seniors and people who need to improve their strength and balance to help their posture mobility. As well as in person classes in Epsom and Ashtead they offer online zoom classes.
