Epsom and Ewell Talking Newspaper audio local news, for the two weeks ending 11th May 2023 features the local election results, new openings and funding and a full programme of upcoming events.

Epsom and Ewell Borough Council news

We have all the Epsom and Ewell Borough Council local election results with news the Residents Association maintained overall control. The Residents’ Associations won 26 seats. Liberal Democrats 4. Labour 3 and Conservatives 2. However, the share of the votes tells a different story with the Conservatives at 20% Lib Dems 17% and Labour 15%.

Surrey County Council news

The future of Kingswood House School has been secured after Surrey County Council refused a local developer planning permission. The school has the highest number of pupils with registered special educational needs (SEND) pupils in Surrey. and has been awarded the status of “Asset of Community Value” for its community work and graded “excellent” by the Independent Schools Inspectorate.

Over £12m of grant funding is now available for Surrey residents to make their homes more energy efficient in properties where the primary form of heating is not gas. Applicants must meet the financial eligibility criteria and their property must have an EPC rating of D-G . Funding is limited so applications will be dealt with on a first-come first-serve basis. Residents can check their eligibility with Action Surrey.

Citizens Advice Epsom and Ewell

A new Age UK report shows that 4 in 10 over-65s with bank accounts don’t manage money online and Citizens Advice Epsom and Ewell (CAEE) support Age UK, as part of their campaign for digital inclusion, in their campaign to ensure millions of people retain access to cash by creating banking hubs in areas where branches have closed.

Epsom Hospital

Pupils from Ewell Grove Primary and Nursery School raised money for the Epsom Medical Equipment Fund (EMEF), this time for a GE Ultrasound scanner for the Maternity Unit in Epsom Hospital. They raised £1132 to get the appeal off to a flying start and the headteacher and pupils from the school were invited to present the scanner to the hospital and were shown how it works.

Gail’s Artisan Bakery

We have news of the new opening of Gail’s Artisan Bakery over three floors in the Ashley Centre this summer 2023, as part of a £5 million refurbishment plan for the centre.

Poster with details of Festival of Ewell Bourne Hall

Festival of Ewell Bourne Hall Friday will take place on May 19th to May 20th 10am – 6pm. There will be performances from local dance schools and activities in the library as well as stalls including the Cash in the Wardrobe market.

We have a full list of May’s Epsom Playhouse program including on Saturday May 20th a performance by the Epsom Male Voice Choir.

On May 17th at 7:30pm Banos Musical Theatre are putting on CHESS The Musical at the Adrian Mann Theatre at Nescot with tickets available at Ticket Source.

The Epsom Antiques,Vintage & Decorative Arts Market returns at the Clock Tower on May 28th 10am – 4pm. This unique market will offer up to 40 antique collectables, vintage, retro, bric a brac & Vinyl records stalls giving the concourse a continental flavour+ interesting decorative arts.

Bourne Hall Film Festival

The Epsom film festival is set to return, hosted at Bourne Hall with an exciting rebrand and relaunch between the 26th and 28th of May, find out more on the Satisfied Eye Facebook page.

Derby Day and The Oaks

The Derby will take place in June, with The Oaks/Ladies Day taking place on Friday the 2nd June. There will be a new food festival and picnics within a new area, closer to the action. Derby Day tickets are available at The Jockey Club In other news, animal activists are threatening to disrupt the Derby as they attempted to The Grand National.
