News Editor

Do you have a wide-ranging interest in reading the local news and a few hours every few weeks to spare to share your enthusiasm with our listeners?

The EETN is currently seeking a volunteer News Editor.

Our Epsom-based charity records local news, magazine articles and podcasts once a fortnight for visually impaired subscribers throughout the Borough.

We have a team of news and magazine editors, readers, sound recordists and mail room staff who meet at our recording studio in Swail House, Epsom, on a fortnightly basis (Thursday mornings).

As we operate on a rota, with a team of four news editors and four magazine editors, you will only be required to visit the studio approximately once every two months. The rota is very flexible and we can juggle dates as needed.

The role of the editors is to provide a selection of material which can be sourced at your leisure from home, then brought into our studio for recording. In the studio the articles are read by our volunteer readers and recorded; the recordings are downloaded onto memory sticks and these are then posted to our subscribers via a special mailing service.

The Talking News service helps to relieve the frustration of not being able to access the written word on account of sight loss. Our friendly team of volunteers produce the talking news service for up to 100 visually impaired residents in the local area.

No previous experience of editing is necessary, though most local news is found online needing some IT skills. Help and support will be provided.

This opportunity would best suit a person who enjoys the written word and is able to select articles that would interest a large group of people with varying interests. A clear speaking voice would be favourable because the editors introduce the readers when the recordings take place.

Good people skills are essential.

As a new member of The Epsom & Ewell Talking Newspaper, and as part of our friendly and established team of volunteers, you will be enthusiastically mentored through the process, which is simple and exceedingly rewarding.
