A visit from the Mayor

Having presented long service awards to the Talking Newspaper volunteers last month, our Honorary President, Councillor Robert Leach, the Mayor of Epsom and Ewell, visited our studio at the beginning of January, to record an interview and a Happy New Year message to be sent out on memory sticks to our listeners.

Although only in office since May 2025, the Mayor has already covered a staggering amount of ground, meeting people all over the Borough at all kinds of events and occasions. He told us that he accepts every invitation if his diary allows, so clearly, he is extremely busy.

He was able to combine his passion for music with his Mayoral duties, when he played the organ at the Borough’s inaugural Carol Concert held in the chapel at Epsom College. He told us he can never resist a piano if he sees one – as we had discovered at our December gathering.

Our interviewer was out of date when she asked about the astonishing 46 books he has written – for it turns out he has just had yet another published! When asked what superpower he could do with to finish his term of office, he replied, “More energy”.

After the interview, Councillor Leach met the three readers who were preparing to record the news and magazine sections. We are hugely grateful for his time and wish him well for his remaining time in office.
