In this week’s Epsom and Ewell Talking Newspaper, we begin with a fundraising story from The Whitehaven News about a cycling challenge being undertaken by amateur cyclist Gavin Towers, who has the eye condition retintis pigmentosa.
As the Delta variant spreads, we have the surprising news that Epsom and Ewell had the highest infection rate in Surrey in the seven days up to the 21st June. We also have a warning from the national Neighbourhood watch scheme about scam emails linking to a website requesting personal and payment details for a Covid pass. Please remember the Covid pass is free from the NHS, details below.
We have news of the reopening of Epsom library and Epsom Square restaurants, cafes, bars and, for Al Fresco dining in the large open plaza, the food cabins. We have news of the opening of Rascals Softplay centre and cafe for 0-5 year olds and a new Dance Studio and Gym, as well as news of a new five screen Cinema due to open in the spring of 2022.
We have a story about the opening of a new cafe, near the Pavillion in Alexandra park recreation ground, Park View Cafe owned by a local resident, who was inspired during lockdown to change her career. The cafe serves vegan options and even special ice cream for dogs.
We have news about how the Borough manages our green spaces:- Horton country park, Epsom Downs, Epsom Common, the Hogsmill Nature Reserve and Nonsuch park. Whilst the Borough council are investigating whether the hIghway grass verges should continue to be mowed after conflicting feedback – pro and against.
The Police appeal for information about some of our featured crime stories this week following: a hate crime that took place in Worcestor Park; a man who was stabbed during a burgalry in Surbiton and an assault on a woman who was grabbed on Epsom common and dragged to the ground on the 29th June.
