When News Editor Jan Collier popped along to Epsom’s new Lidl on the opening morning of 12th August, she reported that before entering the store, every customer was invited by ambassadors Candida and Travis to spin a wheel of fortune and win a prize of snacks, fruit, a trolley token or money off their first shop. ‘It’s a bit of first day fun which is proving very successful’ they told her.
The Mayor of Epsom and Ewell, Councillor Peter O’Donovan was there with his wife Sarah, to officially declare the store open by cutting the ribbon with larger-than-life pink scissors. He laughed when they didn’t exactly ‘cut the mustard’ with the ribbon, but all was well in the end.
The Mayor praised the store’s great produce, excellent layout, wider aisles and toilets, which he said were essential when you have children.
The Upper High Street store, which is larger than the stores in nearby Chessington and New Malden, has a help button at the front entrance for those requiring assistance of any kind from a team member. There’s same level car parking with five Disabled spaces and a flat escalator to the store.
Store Manager Ibrahim said how happy Lidl were to be in Epsom and felt it added value to the town. The building itself, which has 30 apartments above, he described as ‘a work of art’.
