Mayor’s Official Visit

OFFICIAL VISIT FROM OUR PRESIDENT

At the Epsom and Ewell Talking News it’s customary for us to receive an official visit from our President every year. Many listeners will already know that our President is the Mayor of Epsom and Ewell and this year the title is bestowed upon Councillor George Crawford.

The Mayor is no stranger to EETN, however, having only recently popped in to our studios informally, accompanied by his partner, Mayoress Jackie Hennings, for an interview with us, which can be heard on our website, below. However, this time the Mayor visited us in a more official capacity, looking impressive in his gleaming chains of office.

Following a warm welcome by our Chairman Judy Sarssam, herself visually impaired, the Mayor and Mayoress enjoyed meeting and chatting with some of our volunteers, including long termers Heather Griffin and Penny Dearing, who has been with us for more than 25 years. Tea and biscuits were the order of the day and much lively and topical conversation.

Judy expressed her concerns to the Mayor about proposals for re-developing the site where our studio is located and also explained just how difficult it can be on occasions to acquire local borough news. He was sympathetic to our needs and came up with some practical suggestions, for example using Twitter as a media source. The Mayor is an enthusiastic Tweeter and finds it a good way to both spread and hear the news.

When the Mayor’s year in office comes to a close in May, he will remain a Councillor but will naturally have a little more time to spare. He told us that he would continue to be involved with charity work of some kind and, impressed by our work at EETN, he hinted that he may even consider joining our volunteers. We’d be delighted of course to welcome him on board!

Until then, however, he has a very heavy workload and is passionate about ongoing fundraising for his chosen charity Macmillan Cancer Support. He will be hosting several events in the borough in the coming weeks and to find out more about them visit: www.mayorscharitiesepsom.org.uk
